Over the course of eight editions to date, it has developed a recognizable workshop model, and its graduates develop projects in collaboration with producers and apply for funding for further stages of development and production.

A defining feature of the programme is its long-term, collaborative approach, combining individual consultations with group work. Atelier focuses not only on the development of the screenplay itself, but also on strengthening the skills required to operate professionally within the film industry, including legal foundations of project development, pitching, and building productive relationships with producers.

The programme is led by a team of organisers and tutors with international experience who continue to develop their expertise through participation in international workshops and industry training programmes. In response to the needs of the sector, Atelier has also introduced a training module in script consultancy, supporting the development of a new generation of professionals in this field.

Atelier Scenariuszowe provides professional conditions for project development, fostering creative growth and preparing participants for further work within the audiovisual sector.

Pitching

The programme culminates in a public presentation of projects, writers, and consultants to members of the Polish film industry, organised in partnership with the New Horizons International Film Festival. consultations between sessions. During the in-person sessions, participants work on their scripts in groups. Each group, consisting of four screenwriters, is led by one of the Atelier tutors, supported by a screenwriting consultant who is also a student. This approach provides screenwriters with the unique opportunity to collaborate with the same tutor throughout the workshop, enabling them to exchange feedback with other screenwriters, and tracking changes in collaborative projects. It allows the student consultant to participate in the months-long development process, monitor progress, comment on subsequent drafts, and practice providing substantive, constructive, and supportive feedback. Group work is complemented by individual online meetings with the tutor and the consultant working with them.

In addition to literary work, in-person sessions feature blocks of classes devoted to screenwriting-related topics. A strong emphasis is placed on introducing screenwriters to the realities of the Polish film market. We want them to become informed and active participants. Therefore, we also invite producers, directors, sales agents, and other industry professionals to the Atelier. They conduct lectures and workshops on topics such as copyright, negotiations, communication, and working with producers. They analyze, interpret, and spot inconsistencies and discrepancies. They notice the details, but at the same time, they have the big picture before their eyes. A good consultant should be equipped with the ability to read the text carefully, listen attentively, and communicate their impressions delicately yet honestly. The consultation process requires understanding the screenwriter's intentions, their inspirations, how they envision the final result of their work, and what they absolutely want to avoid.

„"Sometimes a consultant discusses various paths one can take when telling a given story; they indicate the possible consequences of specific choices and solutions, but they are never responsible for making the final decisions. These always belong solely to the screenwriter. A consultant doesn't rewrite the text for the author (sometimes a script doctor does this) nor does he co-write it with them (which is the responsibility of a co-screenwriter). By asking questions and delving deeper, they help the author get to the heart of their own story. They don't impose their own solutions, even if they sometimes suggest them. Their work isn't about knowing better, but about wanting to better understand – a given character, plot, theme, storyline, or emotion," explains Anna Bielak, program supervisor for consultants.

Three people are accepted into the script consultant program each year. Each participant works for a full year in one of three script groups alongside a tutor – Filip K. Kasperaszek, Norah McGettigan, or Aleksandra Świerk. They observe the tutor's methods of developing a script, participate in the group process, and gradually learn how to formulate and provide feedback to those developing their scripts.

Each tutor works in their own unique way. There is no single consultation method or manual that governs all projects. The approach can vary depending on the group dynamics, the individual needs of the authors, or the specific nature of the texts. Therefore, the tutor learns to use their tutor's method and works within it. At the same time, during masterclasses and collaborative activities outside of the scriptwriting groups, they are exposed to other ways of thinking about and developing the script. All of this is in the spirit of the Atelier's values: careful, collaborative work; high professional standards; and real support in strengthening new competencies. This model allows for not just learning one "correct" method, but also gradually building one's own consulting skills. It requires openness to different storytelling methods, a willingness to shift the conversation's direction, attentiveness to the individual needs of the creators, and the ability to manage emotions that arise during the group process.

A significant part of the program is a session designed exclusively for three program participants, facilitated by the group leader – script consultant and screenwriter Anna Bielak. This is a space for discussing group work experiences, comparing different consultation methods, asking questions about relationships with creators, and discussing the realities of working as a consultant in the audiovisual market.

Those preparing to become consultants also have the opportunity to meet with selected experts actively working in the audiovisual market – creative producers, development executives from leading Polish production companies, television station editors, and individuals responsible for project development on streaming platforms. The selection of experts changes annually, allowing each group to examine current practices, trends, and market challenges, and to better understand the various contexts in which script development takes place.

As part of this module, participants also collaboratively analyze scripts provided by graduates of previous editions of the screenwriting program, and over time, they transition from observing others' work to independently consulting with creators under the supervision of the program supervisor. The program aims to prepare professional consultants to work with various audiovisual formats. Therefore, the program encompasses both the development of feature films and work with television series. It consists of discussions, analyses, masterclasses, and practical sessions that complement work in screenwriting groups, as well as other lectures and meetings intended for all program participants. Participation in the program requires systematic work, even between sessions. Preparation for each meeting involves careful reading and analysis of texts submitted by screenwriters – both those discussed in the screenwriting groups and the materials intended for work in the consultant training module.

APPLICATIONS

         Required materials:
1. What matters most to us is the potential of the text, the talent, sensitivity of the author, and his or her willingness to pursue further literary work. Therefore, we prefer treatments and initial script drafts, but we also accept texts at an earlier or later stage.

2) Can people without experience or screenwriting education apply?

A film education is not necessary. In the past, the Atelier has hosted filmmakers without a film education, and their projects, as well as the filmmakers themselves, have successfully found a foothold in the market. However, the Atelier is not a film school; we do not teach the basics of dramaturgy or filmmaking, but we expect applicants to possess this knowledge.

3) Can I apply for more than one project?

Yes, our regulations allow for a maximum of two projects. Each project requires a separate application and separate application fee.

4) Can I submit an animated film project?

Yes, if it's a full-length.

5) Is it possible to develop a series project within the Script Atelier?

The Screenplay Atelier is a program focused on the development of feature films. However, it's possible that during the development of a given story, it may become apparent that a series structure is more appropriate for the content, as it allows for much greater multi-threading. While we generally don't accept scripts from series, in the past, it has been reported that a scriptwriter would complete the workshop with a series project that evolved from the originally submitted plot.

6) Can a screenwriter submit a project that already has a producer in development?

Yes. However, it's worth remembering that the annual Screenplay Atelier program culminates in a final presentation (pitching) during Polish Days at the New Horizons Festival. The goal is to find partners for the project, with particular emphasis on producers.

7) Can I apply as a duo?

Yes. For projects with multiple authors, a maximum of two people representing the project may participate in the Atelier.

8) Does a project need to have a director?

No. Atelier is primarily a program for screenwriters. The pitching session at the end of the year-long program can be an excellent opportunity to find a potential director for your project.

9) Is there a pattern to the explication? What should it include?

There's no formula for an explication. An explication is a text from which we'd like to learn more about your intentions as the author: what inspired you to create this story, why it's important to you, how you envision its future development, and why you should be the one to tell it. An explication also helps us better understand your emotional relationship to the story you're telling.

10) In what form should the application be submitted?

Please send your submission by email to atelier@scenariuszowe.pl. All elements should be included in a single PDF file and marked as follows:

PROJECT TITLE_AUTHOR'S NAME

11) Can I apply to Atelier again with a project that was not accepted last year?

Yes, however, before re-applying for the workshop it is a good idea to work on such a project on your own and apply with another, new draft (treatment or scenario).

12) Can I participate in the Atelier Year-Round Program more than once?

No, due to the specific nature of the workshops and their program, repeat participation is not possible. The year-long Atelier program encompasses not only work on the text but also classes, lectures, and workshops on a broad range of topics related to screenwriting and the audiovisual market, which we offer to participants annually. Repeat participation would mean that the participant would not fully benefit from this part of the program.

13) When will I receive information about my qualification/non-qualification to participate in the Atelier?

We will notify selected participants of the selection results at least two weeks before the first in-person session. The exact date is specified in the regulations for each session. Candidates selected in advance will be invited to an online interview.

14) When should I pay the Atelier participation fee?

The Atelier participation fee must be paid no later than 14 days before the start of the first in-person session.

15) Can I become a freelance listener of the Script Atelier?

We do not plan to accept freelance listeners.

16) Can I attend only one workshop session? Or do I have to attend all the sessions?

The design of the Screenwriting Atelier program and its format are based on our experience, gained not only from organizing previous editions but also from participating in similar projects around the world. The subsequent stages of text development, and therefore the schedule, are carefully planned and constitute elements of a long-term process. Therefore, we are committed to ensuring that accepted participants attend all sessions and activities, as this is the only way to fully benefit from their participation in the Atelier.

17) What does group work with scenario consultants involve?

During group sessions, participants provide feedback on their texts, and the consultant oversees the discussion, moderating and participating. The consultant takes on the role of a creative partner, asking questions about the plot, character motivations, dramatic solutions, the story's world, and so on. Together with the creator, they explore possible paths for text development and the consequences of specific script choices, without imposing pre-defined solutions. The consultant ensures the optimal process for each project and fosters a creative and inspiring atmosphere within the group.

18) How long will it take me to participate in the Atelier? Will it interfere with my work?

The time you should set aside is for attending in-person meetings, online consultations between sessions, and writing. Every author's pace of work varies, as does the time required to create subsequent drafts. It's worth considering whether participating in the Atelier fits your schedule and whether you'll be able to devote yourself to the intensive development of this particular text.

19) Are there additional online meetings/consultations between in-person sessions?

Yes, online consultations take place between all in-person sessions. Their dates are individually scheduled with the consultant overseeing the project and depend on the writer's needs and the project's current stage.

20) Does the Atelier have the rights to my text after the workshops are completed?

No. The Atelier does not become the owner or co-owner of the participants' texts.

As part of this module, participants also jointly analyze scripts provided by graduates of previous editions of the screenwriting program, and over time they move from observing the work of others to conducting independent consultations with creators under the supervision of the program supervisor.

The program aims to prepare professional consultants to work with various audiovisual formats. Therefore, the program encompasses both the development of full-length feature films and work with television series. It consists of discussions, analyses, masterclasses, and practical sessions, which complement work in scriptwriting groups, as well as other lectures and meetings for all program participants. Participation in the program requires systematic work, even between sessions. Preparation for each meeting involves carefully reading and analyzing texts submitted by screenwriters – both those discussed in the scriptwriting groups and the materials intended for the consultant training module.

All rights remain with the creator. If a film is produced based on a script developed within the Atelier, the participant is asked to include a credit to the Atelier in the credits.

If you have any additional questions, please contact us by email: atelier@scenariuszowe.pl

Program całoroczny Atelier Scenariuszowe O PROGRAMIE O programie Roczny warsztat ATELIER SCENARIUSZOWE to program rozwoju projektów fabularnych realizowany cyklicznie od […]

["post-333","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry

Atelier Scenariuszowe - scenariuszowe.pl

<meta name="description" content="ATELIER SCENARIUSZOWE to program rozwoju projektów fabularnych realizowany cyklicznie od 2017 roku, adresowany przede wszystkim do scenarzystów oraz piszących reżyserów.
